A few years ago, I experienced a moment of deep regret when I lost something that was both important and valuable to me. It happened during a family trip to Da Nang, a coastal city in central Vietnam that’s famous for its beautiful beaches and vibrant atmosphere.
The item I lost was a gold bracelet that held immense sentimental value. It was a gift from my grandmother, given to me on my 18th birthday. Although it wasn’t extravagant in terms of monetary value, it symbolized her love and blessings. She had passed away the previous year, and wearing the bracelet always made me feel a special connection to her. It wasn’t just a piece of jewelry—it was a piece of my heart.
I lost it one afternoon while strolling along My Khe Beach. I remember taking off the bracelet and putting it in my bag to avoid getting it wet, as we were planning to dip our feet in the water. Unfortunately, I forgot to close the pocket where I’d placed it. Somewhere along the walk, the bracelet must have slipped out without me noticing. It wasn’t until we returned to the hotel that evening that I realized it was gone. Despite going back to search the area, the bracelet was nowhere to be found.
When I realized it was missing, I was devastated. At first, I felt denial—I checked every corner of my bag multiple times, hoping I’d simply overlooked it. But when reality set in, I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt for being so careless. Losing something with so much emotional significance felt like losing a part of my grandmother all over again. However, over time, I found solace in the memories and values she had left behind, which couldn’t be diminished by the loss of a material object.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson about treasuring relationships and memories above physical possessions. It also reminded me to be more careful with meaningful items in the future.
